- Our parks need dedicated funding. During the recession, Olympia fell behind on essential maintenance and acquisition of parks. Left unfunded, the $4 million maintenance backlog will result in park deterioration and possible closures. A Metropolitan Parks District creates a revenue stream that will alleviate the parks budget shortfall and help us meet future needs. Demand for parks is projected to grow, along with the population, 40% in 20 years.
- An MPD will have oversight from a citizen’s committee for transparency and accountability over public funds.
- Extensive community input this year showed that Olympians care about natural open spaces and trails, developing neighborhood parks, adding athletic fields and other amenities for youth and adult recreation, and protecting wildlife habitat.
- Citizens identified high-priority projects including LBA Woods, the last large forest tract within City limits, preserving Percival Landing, and completing the Woodland and West Bay trails.
- For 54 cents per $1,000 of assessed value -- $9 a month for a $200,000 home--we can generate revenue to maintain existing parks and purchase land for new parks.
- An MPD demonstrates Olympia’s enthusiasm for parks and creates a legacy for future generations.
- Support stable, dedicated funding for our parks. Please vote YES on Proposition 1 for an Olympia Metropolitan Parks District!
